Join PearlAfric for the 8 days Rwanda – Uganda Gorilla Tracking & Wildlife Safari you meet eye to eye with the amazing gorillas and chimpanzees in Uganda and Rwanda. This close encounter with these amazing apes is simply breathtaking. Also get a close encounter with other diverse African wildlife, beautiful landscapes and amazing culture. This trip starts in Kigali and ends at Entebbe International Airport.

Arrival in Kigali International Airport – Afternoon visit to Genocide Memorial Museum

Day 1

Meet and greet at Kigali International Airport where your Rwanda – Uganda Gorillla Tracking & Wildlife Safaria starts. Our representative  will warmly welcome you and facilitate seamless arrival formalities. Your will then be transferred to your hostel where you will be briefed about your adventure safari.

Genocide Memorial Center

Depending on the time of arrival you are advised to have money changed on this day. You may have lunch in a selected restaurant in town (at your own expense). After lunch we proceed to Genocide Memorial Center where we shall learn about the Hutus and Tutsi tribe prior to the Genocide.

Nyamirambo Township

If time allows you can have an optional leisure drive through Nyamirambo Township. This is the oldest town in Kigali which has a unique stretched neighborhood found in southwestern corner of Kigali that envelopes diverse behavior with dominancy of Arab – like Culture.

It is a huge stretched corner which is sometimes referred to as a gangsters’ Paradise. Characterized with many Muslim residents, mosques and unlike other places that close by 8 pm with everyone inside their homes, Nyamirambo hustles and rocks late into the nights.

Transfer to Nyungwe forest National Park with Cultural Encounter Canopy Walk

Day 2

After breakfast, transfer to Nyungwe Forest which is South West of Rwanda. Have an optional visit the Ethnographic Museum to learn about the history of the people of Rwanda as well as East Africa as a whole.

Ingoma Nschya women’s group

After that you will watch the Ingoma Nschya women’s group initiate in Rwanda. This is Rwanda’s first-ever women’s drumming group which actively involves women’s participation in the cultural development of Rwanda. Ingoma Nschya has the twin goals of healing and women’s empowerment by using positive methods to reconcile with the violent past of their country and personal tragedie.

Canopy Walk

We proceed and checking into the lodge. You can go for an optional afternoon activity after lunch. We will drive to Uwinka, the main reception center of the park and set out for the canopy walk (extra fee of $60 per person). The Canopy Walkway is a highlight of a Nyungwe Safari and hangs 60 meters above the forest floor between giant trees and towers, this is East Africa’s only Canopy Walkway that provides a stunning view of the park’s amazing wildlife and nature.

Morning Chimpanzee Tracking and Afternoon Transfer to Ruhengeri

Day 3

After early breakfast we will transfer to the nearest reception center in Nyungwe Forest for the Chimpanzee Tracking.

Nyungwe Rainforest is a haven for primates and believed to be one of the oldest forests in Africa. Nyungwe includes habituated chimpanzees and 12 other primates species (including a 400-strong troop of habituated Ruwenzori Black & White Colobus). It’s also a birder’s paradise with over 300 species, including 16 endemics, and is home to 75 different species of mammals.

After lunch in your lodge we transfer to Ruhengeri reaching late afternoon for dinner and overnight stay.

Hike to the Dian Fossey Grave – Afternoon Transfer to Kisoro/Mutanda

Day 4

After breakfast we transfer from park headquarters to the trail head to access the Karisoke Research Camp which is about 10 minutes from the park boundary.

Trekking to the Dian Fossey’s grave takes about 1,5-2 hours hike, which too rewards you with good views of forest hogs, forest elephants, a variety of primates and bird species. It is so inspiring to learn about someone who was so dedicated and left a legacy that exists even today.

You will find the house from where Dian Fossey was mysteriously murdered in 1985. More peaceful is the place where she was buried just next to her favorite gorilla friend. Digit and about 20 other mountain gorillas either killed by poachers or suffered death for other reasons unknown.

Lake Mutanda

You have lunch in your lodge. We proceed crossing the border to Ugandan side enjoying a very spectacular scenic view of Lake Mutanda. Lake Mutanda is nestled in the foothills of the Virunga Mountain Range, at an altitude of 1,800 meters (5,900 ft.). Your stay around the lake will reward you with a good view of three volcanoes.

Ultimate Gorilla Tracking – Afternoon Mikozi Village Community Visit

Day 5

After an early breakfast depart to the starting point in Bwindi for the briefing about your gorilla trekking adventure after which you will be led by experienced gorilla trackers on the slopes of the volcanoes.

Although the hike can be physically demanding, the anticipation of the exciting experience ahead is amazing, and the beauty of the gorilla forest and its inhabitants are fascinating. You are allowed an hour with the gorillas before finally sloping down back to your lodge.

Nature Walk

If your trek was relatively short, you may have a guided nature walk around the lodge and the surrounding communities in the evening. After that you will return to the lodge where you will enjoy dinner.

Do not forget to carry your rain gear, packed lunch, plenty of water, gloves, hat, and waterproof bag for protection of your camera in case of rain.

Gorilla Habituation Experience

Alternatively you may pay an extra charge of $900 per person for Gorilla Habituation. This needs prior arrangements and bookings. Gorilla Habituation grants you more hours with the gorillas as you learn more about their behavior.

Early Morning transfer to Queen Elizabeth – Afternoon Boat Cruise

Day 6

After your early morning breakfast pack-up your bags and transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park through sector Ntungamo –Ishasha Plains. Enjoy the wilderness and its habitants that are highlighted by Uganda’s Tree Climbing Lions as well as numerous Birds and more Mammals. You may be able to sport the park’s famous tree climbing lions with the help of your guide.

Boat cruise

You will enjoy a hot lunch at your lodge. Later in the afternoon take a unique 2 hour boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel into Lake Edward. This trip passes through possibly the highest concentration of hippos and this launch/cruise offers an excellent platform for photography, bird watching and game viewing.

Morning Game Drive and Afternoon Transfer to Entebbe

Day 7

We start with an early morning game drive. You have the opportunity to spot lion, leopard, giant forest hog, cape buffalo, elephant, defassa waterbuck, Uganda kob, topi and bushbuck. Be sure to have your camera ready for these amazing sightings!

Balloon Safari

Alternatively you may opt to go for a balloon safari (extra fee of $380) at the Kasenyi gate of Queen Elizabeth NP at 5:30 am. The flight gives you great photo opportunities that are different from an ordinary safari on the ground. After landing, celebrate the flight with a glass of sparkling wine. After the toast, passengers sit down to a delectable bush breakfast prepared by Mweya Safari Lodge. The bush breakfast makes for a memorable ending to your ballooning adventure in Queen Elizabeth.

We have a packed lunch and drive back to Kampala with a stopover at the Equator where you will have an opportunity to stand in 2 hemispheres at the same time. Take some photos, then another stop over at the Mpigi Royal Drum Makers where you will be able to watch the ceremonial drums being crafted using methods passed down through the generations arriving Entebbe early afternoon.

Chimps Close up in Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (Zoo)

Day 8

Have breakfast and visit the Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC) where you are sure of closely encountering mammals, primates, plants and bird species that include the Albertine endemic shoebill.

You will enjoy a chimp’s close up for 1 hour, as well you may continue with a full day keeper experience at the chimps section (extra fee of $150 per person). Here you will have time to observe, prepare food and clean (this figure is inclusive of meals for clients).

Sunset Cruise

However depending on your flight time, you may choose to sum up your Rwanda – Uganda adventure with a sunset cruise on Lake Victoria (extra fee of $35 per person). You can sample delicious fish at your cost while there!
