Tanzania's Burgeoning Butterfly Projects by Peter A Coward

Since its inception a few years ago the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre at "Pete" village, a location about 1 kilometer before the Jozani National Park Headquarters, has been running an initiative that encourages local farmers to catch and breed butterflies in return for a low salary. Pupae can fetch anywhere from 200 Tshs to 350 Tshs depending on the species. As is often the case in tropical climates the butterflies only live up to 6 weeks, which provides an endless array of activities and potential income for eager to make a living farmers. While there are approximately 17,000 known species of rhopalocera, or butterflies in the world at the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre there are typically between 10-20 different breeds. The enclosure style here is a peaceful sanctuary of natural winding paths, native flowers ferns and light foliage.
